Not all STEM learning has to follow instructions. In our LEGO Free Build programs, kids explore, invent, and build whatever they can imagine using thousands of LEGO bricks, minifigures, and specialty pieces.
Whether they want to construct a city, design a spaceship, or simply see what they can create from scratch, Free Build gives them the space to dream big and build even bigger.
What Is LEGO Free Build?
LEGO Free Build sessions offer:
- Thousands of unsorted and sorted LEGO pieces
- Tables or stations for open-ended building
- Optional themed prompts to spark creativity
- Encouragement from instructors (without step-by-step guides)
- A focus on fun, exploration, and self-expression
These sessions are screen-free, self-paced, and a favorite for both casual builders and serious LEGO fans.
LEGO Build Challenges — With Prizes!
Many Free Build sessions include optional LEGO Build Challenges—friendly competitions where kids can test their creativity, design skills, and teamwork to win fun prizes!
Example challenges include:
- Build the tallest freestanding tower
- Create the most unique animal mash-up
- Design a vehicle that rolls
- Use a mystery brick in a surprising way
- Recreate something from real life
- Complete a speed build in a timed event
- Follow a fun themed prompt (space, underwater, fantasy, etc.)
Winners receive small prizes like LEGO blind bags, mini sets, or certificates.
Every participant is celebrated for creativity, problem-solving, and effort.
These challenges build confidence and add a layer of excitement without the pressure of traditional competition.

Donate LEGO or Sponsor a Prize
We welcome donations of:
- LEGO bricks (new or used)
- Baseplates, minifigs, wheels, or specialty parts
- Gently used tablets for our robotics programs
- Small LEGO sets or accessories for challenge prizes
Porch pickup is available for local donors. Your support helps us offer high-quality STEM play to more students across Central Indiana.
